For the big game fisherman the waters off the Elephant Coast provide a spirited challenge, with the deep zones off the continental shelf being home to species such as marlin, sailfish, barracuda, tuna, king and queen fish. Deep sea fishing launches are available from Maphelana, St Lucia, Cape Vidal and Sodwana Bay. There are numerous fishing safaris that can be arranged by experienced charters if you don't have your own boat, but do want to experience the thrill of deep sea fishing – be warned, you may get hooked.
Lake Sibaya, Kosi Bay, Cape Vidal, and Lake St Lucia are well-loved fishing spots and a favourite amongst anglers not only for the good fishing, but for the tranquil settings. Grunter, kob, perch and shad may be bagged, though daily numbers are limited. There is tiger fishing at Jozini Dam.
All sea life along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal is protected. Permits are required for fishing (surf and deep sea) and for removing crayfish, mussels, octopus, oysters, sea lice and mudprawns.
Permits can be obtained from the post office, or from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife offices. No person may sell, or offer for sale, any fish without a permit issued by the Department of Sea Fisheries.
